Virtually New You

Hormones · DUTCH Testing

“Just your age.” One blood draw was never going to show the whole story.

The mood swings, the 3 a.m. wake-ups, the cycle that turned on you, the fog — and the answer you got was a shrug and “that’s just your age.” A single blood draw is one moment in time. It cannot show how your hormones move across a day, or how your body processes estrogen once it is made. The DUTCH test can, and that is usually where the missing answer has been hiding.

Finding 01 · what the DUTCH test reads

Levels, rhythm, and what your body does with them

DUTCH stands for Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones. You collect a few small dried-urine samples at home across a day. From those, it reads three things a standard test usually cannot: your hormone levels, the rhythm of your cortisol from morning to night, and how your body metabolizes its hormones once they are made — the paths your estrogen takes as it is broken down and cleared.

That last part matters more than most people are ever told. Two women with the same estrogen level can feel completely different depending on how their bodies process it.

Finding 02 · why a blood draw missed it

Levels normalSingle draw

A snapshot cannot show a rhythm

A blood test measures hormones at one instant. But cortisol is supposed to move — high in the morning to get you going, low at night so you can sleep. A single number cannot show whether that curve is intact or upside down. And standard testing does not show how you are clearing estrogen at all. So the levels read “normal,” the symptoms get filed under “age” or “stress,” and the part that explained how you feel was never on the page.

Finding 03 · what a fuller look reads

The fuller hormone picture

When it is appropriate for your situation, a DUTCH panel is read as a whole story, not one number:

  • The daily cortisol rhythm — whether your stress hormone rises and falls when it should, which shapes energy and sleep
  • Estrogen and how you metabolize it — the pathways your body uses to break it down, which is often the piece behind PMS, perimenopause, and mood
  • Progesterone and androgens — the balance that drives cycle changes, sleep, and how you feel in your own skin
  • Context markers — like melatonin and a few nutrient clues that round out the sleep-and-stress picture

One level in isolation is easy to dismiss. Read together, next to how you actually feel, they turn “just your age” into something specific and workable. If your question is broader, start on the hormones overview.

Patient intake · what people describe

Does this sound like you?

  • Mood swings or irritability that do not feel like them
  • Waking at 3 a.m. and not getting back to sleep
  • A cycle that changed — timing, PMS, or heaviness
  • Low energy, low drive, and stubborn changes in weight
  • Being told it is perimenopause or age, with no plan attached

None of these point to one thing on their own. Together, they are a reason to read the fuller hormone picture — not to accept “that’s just your age” as the end of it.

Hormones do not act alone. A DUTCH panel often sits alongside your cortisol rhythm, the wider hormone picture, and even thyroid, which shapes how the others behave. If your picture is bigger than one thing, the Clarity Visit is still the place to start.

Addenda · DUTCH testing & the Clarity Visit

How is DUTCH different from a hormone blood test?

A blood test is one moment. DUTCH uses dried-urine samples across the day to show your cortisol rhythm and how you metabolize your hormones — two things a single draw cannot capture, and often where the answer is.

Do I have to do a DUTCH test to work with you?

No. It is one tool, used when it fits your picture. The Clarity Visit starts with what you already have; whether DUTCH adds value is a decision we make together.

Can this help with perimenopause?

It can add real clarity, because perimenopause is as much about shifting rhythms and metabolism as raw levels. This content is educational and is not medical advice or a diagnosis, and we do not promise specific outcomes.

Is this available outside Pennsylvania?

Clinical services are limited to adults physically located in Pennsylvania at the time of care.

One next step

Bring the “normal” hormones and the symptoms they never explained.

A single blood draw can’t show a rhythm or how you clear estrogen — the parts that usually explain how you feel. Another year of “just your age” doesn’t have to be the plan.
